Michael Gambon, the actor known for playing the role of Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter series, passes away at 82.

Gambon was reported to pass away in a hospital after a fight with Pneumonia. Gambon’s wife and son were with him when he passed. News of his passing broke when his publicist released a statement saying, “we are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon. (He was a) beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in (the) hospital with his wife, Anne and son, Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of Pneumonia.”

Gambon assumed the role of Dumbledore in the popular book-to-movie series Harry Potter after Richard Harris’ passing. Gambon started appearing as Dumbledore in the third movie, “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”.

The Harry Potter cast also expressed their deep sentiments for their beloved co-star.

Harry Potter’s lead actor, Daniel Radcliffe, stated to the Guardian that Gambon was “one of the most brilliant, effortless actors I’ve ever had the privilege of working with, but despite his immense talent, the thing I will remember most about him is how much fun he had doing his job.”

“He was silly, irreverent, and hilarious. He loved his job but never seemed defined by it. He was an incredible story and joke teller, and his habit of blurring the lines between fact and fiction when talking to journalists meant that he was also one of the most entertaining people with whom you could ever wish to do a press junket. I’m so sad to hear that he passed, but I am so grateful for the fact that I am one of the lucky people who got to work with him.” Radcliffe added.

Another Harry Potter co-star, Fiona Shaw, who played Harry’s aunt, Petunia, told BBC Radio 4 that Gambon was “a brilliant, magnificent trickster (who) varied his career remarkably and never judged what he was doing, he just played”.

The Albus Dumbledore actor was granted the title CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1990 Queen’s New Year Honours List and was awarded the Knight Bachelor in the 1998 Queen’s New Year Honour List for his contribution to drama.
