MANILA, PHILIPPINES — During the 2023 Met Gala, also known as the biggest night in fashion, an unexpected visitor in the form of a cockroach caused a stir and became a viral moment that was widely shared on social media. The uninvited insect was captured on camera scurrying between the feet of reporters and photographers, and many people were bothered by its presence.
Videos and photos of the cockroach were taken by representatives from magazines Variety, People, and Vulture, with Getty Images photographer Kevin Mazur even capturing a few close-up shots of the insect.
Mazur pretended to stomp on the cockroach, but it ignored him. Later, Variety announced that the cockroach did not make it into the museum and was stepped on. As a tribute to the cockroach that went viral on social media, Variety uploaded an obituary photo for the little critter.
Fans of the cockroach celebrated its presence on the red carpet, despite cockroaches often plaguing the streets of New York City. One person tweeted: “He’s there to make sure you never forget that this is in New York.”
According to PestWorld, cockroaches can survive without their heads for a week, run almost 5 kilometers per hour, and have an attraction to alcohol, particularly beer.
Besides the cockroach that stole the show, there were other remarkable elements on the red carpet of the Met Gala. This year, the steps leading up to the museum were adorned with a cream-colored design featuring red and blue swirls created by Tadao Ando, the designer of this year’s exhibition, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.”
The usual hedges of greenery and flowers that separate the press from the celebrities were substituted by light installations made of recycled water bottles, which shone with an icy blue light. Additionally, matching chandeliers were suspended above the red carpet.
The Met Gala was chaired by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and celebrities such as actresses Penélope Cruz and Michaela Coel, tennis star Roger Federer, and singer Dua Lipa. It was graced by many famous personalities such as Rihanna, Anne Hathaway, Kim Kardashian, and Paris Hilton. – WhatALife!/Jayve
