MANILA, PHILIPPINES — During a press briefing on Thursday, January 12, the Department of Information and Communications Technology reminds the public to register their SIM cards before the deadline on April 26, 2023.

DICT Spokesperson Anna Mae Lamentillo disclosed that ICT Secretary Ivan John Uy hopes Filipinos avoid last-minute SIM card registration.

“We want to remind the public to register early because all unregistered SIMs will be deactivated once the registration period ends on April 26, 2023,” Lamentillo said.

Based on the latest data provided by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), only 10.97% of SIM cards have been registered. This means that out of the almost 170 million SIM cards, only 18.5 million have been registered.

Of the total, Smart Communications leads with 8.9 million registered SIMs, followed by Globe Inc. with 7.9 million. Meanwhile, DITO Telecommunity Inc. already has 1.6 million registered SIMs out of its 13 million subscribers in total.

DICT to establish SIM card registration booths around the country

To help hasten SIM card registration, DICT announced during a press briefing on Tuesday, January 10, that it will partner with other government agencies to reach geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDA). Lamentillo said they are eyeing the establishment of registration facilities to assist users with little to no internet.

The ICT agency also said it aims to reach one million users registered per day. However, it still anticipates a lull and then a surge near the deadline.

For people who have complaints and concerns about SIM card registration, the DICT directs the public to call its official hotline 1326.
