MANILA, PHILIPPINES — As of January 4, 2023, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) reports that 14 million SIM cards have been registered since the start of registration on December 27 last year.
In the latest update by the NTC on its official website portal, over 14,050,125 SIM cards have been registered as of January 4, 2023.
Of the 14 million total, DITO Telecommunity Corp. accounted for 1,200,897, Globe Telecom Inc. for 6,135,596, and Smart Communications Inc. for 6,713,632, the highest of all three.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signed the SIM Card Registration Act, or Republic Act No. 11934, to solve the numerous spam texts bombarding mobile users.
The law provides a 180-day period, or until April 26, 2023, for all users to register their SIM cards. A 120-day extension is also provided to the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) after the deadline.
If, within the registration period, a SIM card has not been registered, it will be deactivated.
SIM registration booths to be established in the PH
The government has informed the public that it will set up booths in areas in the country with little to no internet to assist residents in the SIM registration process.
Smart Communications, led by PLDT and Smart First Vice-President Cathy Yang, provided a statement saying it will create booths across the country in collaboration with local government units, partner stores, and SIM distributors to help hasten the registration process.
“Register your SIMs now, and help prevent scammers and predators online. We look forward to further collaboration with local government units and partners on-ground across the Philippines, helping hasten our SIM Registration process,” Yang said.
