I wish that Heaven had visiting hours . . .

As soon as you hear the intro, one can already feel their heart slowly breaking as Ed Sheeran’s woeful voice starts singing — tugging at your heartstrings.

Almost two months after releasing his glamorous, glitter-filled vampire crusade single “Bad Habits,” Sheeran followed up with a new song, “Visiting Hours,” which dropped on Thursday, August 19.

Contrary to his previous upbeat song, “Visiting Hours” is a heart-wrenching ballad equipped with lyrics that will indeed hit you right in the feels. The 30-year-old Grammy winner dedicated his new song to his close friend, Michael, who recently passed away.

According to Bustle, Sheeran finished the song while quarantining in Australia to attend his friend’s memorial. He described the entire experience as the first time he’s ever felt “proper grief” in his life.

“This is a song that is really, really dear to my heart, and it’s one of my favourite songs on the album,” Sheeran said on Instagram Live.

He also shared the meaning behind his upcoming album, saying, “Basically, the symbolism behind the album is new life,” he said. “Over the last sort of four years, there’s different experiences in life including getting married, having a kid, losing a friend, and I just felt like the butterfly symbolism fit in with that.”

Fifth Studio Album, Equals

Sheeran released the heartfelt acoustic ballad and its moving performance video on Thursday, along with the announcement of his fifth studio album, Equals (=). He also revealed that the album will be his most personal record to date, which fans can expect to arrive on October 29.

The official performance video took place in St. Stephen’s Church in London, accompanied by a choir that added a more poignant feel to the song as Sheeran sang: “I wish that heaven had visiting hours so I could just show up and bring the news.”

[Verse 1]
I wish that Heaven had visiting hours
So I could just show up and bring the news
That she’s getting older and I wish that you’d met her
The things that she’ll learn from me, I got them all from you

[Chorus]
Can I just stay a while and we’ll put all the world to rights?
The little ones will grow and I’ll still drink your favourite wine
And soon, they’re going to close, but I’ll see you another day
So much has changed since you’ve been away

[Verse 2]
I wish that Heaven had visiting hours
So I could just swing by and ask your advice
What would you do in my situation?
I hadn’t a clue how I’d even raise them
What would you do? ‘Cause you always do what’s right

[Chorus]
Can we just talk a while until my worries disappear?
I’d tell you that I’m scared of turning out a failure
You’d say, “Remember that the answer’s in the love that we create”
So much has changed since you’ve been away

[Verse 3]
I wish that Heaven had visiting hours
And I would ask them if I could take you home
But I know what they’d say, that it’s for the best
So I will live life the way you taught me
And make it on my own

[Chorus]
And I will close the door, but I will open up my heart
And everyone I love will know exactly who you are
‘Cause this is not goodbye, it is just ’til we meet again
So much has changed since you’ve been away
