MANILA, PHILIPPINES — Frontline members of the pandemic have opted to take a stand in support of presidential candidate Vice President Leni Robredo and her campaign mate, Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan.

Vice President Leni Robredo and her running aspirant, Sen. Kiko Pangilinan, have received support from over 12,000 doctors from various organizations.

The doctors, named “Doctors for Leni and Kiko” at a press conference yesterday, said they chose to support the duo because they have real compassion for the Filipino people and solid platforms to address the current health crisis caused by the COVID-19 outbreak.

They noted that the Robredo-Pangilinan team actually cares about Filipinos and has a solid plan to help the country recover from the pandemic’s impacts.

“Naniniwala kami na ngayon ang panahon na maging makatotohanan at manindigan upang pahalagahan ang buhay. Isang tambalan lamang ang nakikita naming may mga ganitong katangian, may malasakit sa Pilipino, at may malinaw na plataporma upang wakasan ang hirap na dulot ng pandemya at iangat ang antas ng pamumuhay ng bawat Pilipino,” the group said.

(We believe now is the time to be realistic and stand up to value life. We see only one tandem with these qualities, with concern for the Filipino people, and with a clear platform to end the suffering caused by the pandemic and raise the standard of living of every Filipino.)

Hundreds of volunteer doctors also reacted to Robredo’s call for assistance in Bayanihan E-Konsulta, a free teleconsultation program for COVID-19 patients, and Swab Cab, a project that delivers free antigen tests in locations where there are a lot of positive cases.

Robredo also launched her Kalayaan sa Covid Plan, which emphasizes the importance of a well-coordinated COVID response strategy. It aims to speed up the distribution of benefits to health professionals, including hazard pay, as well as expand coverage to include COVID sick leave, medical insurance, and food and transportation allowances.

The doctors’ backing for Robredo was partly predictable, given that the vice president was one of the first government leaders to assist the health sector during the pandemic.

Robredo’s pandemic reaction was even praised for putting special attention on the needs of healthcare personnel. – WhatALife! / Francis
