PAGASA: Shear line affects the eastern sections of Southern Luzon and Visayas, Northeast Monsoon affects the rest of Luzon

WEATHER UPDATE – According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Shear line affects the eastern sections of Southern Luzon and Visayas, Northeast Monsoon affects the rest of Luzon.

WEATHER UPDATE TODAY – January 12, 2024

PAGASA reports that the Shear Line will affect eastern sections of Southern Luzon and Visayas, while the Northeast Monsoon will impact the rest of Luzon. 

Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, and Quezon will encounter cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms caused by Shear Line. The moderate to heavy rains can cause possible flash floods and landslides. 

Cagayan Valley, Apayao, Kalinga, and Aurora will experience cloudy skies with light rains due to the Northeast Monsoon.These conditions are not expected to cause significant disruption.



Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon can anticipate partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains due to Northeast Monsoon. These conditions are not expected to cause any impact. 

The rest of the country will encounter partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms caused by Easterlies / Localized Thunderstorms. Severe landslides or flash floods are expected during the thunderstorm. 

Based on PAGASA’s Wind and Coastal Water forecast:

  • The eastern sections of Southern Luzon and Visayas will experience strong northeast winds, causing rough coastal water conditions (2.8 to 4.0 meters).
  • The rest of Luzon and Visayas  will experience moderate to strong northeast winds, leading to moderate to rough coastal waters (2.5 to 3.7 meters).
  • Mindanao will encounter light to moderate northeast winds, causing slight to moderate coastal water conditions (0.6 to 2.5 meters).

The combination of the Northeast Monsoon and Easterlies leads to diverse weather conditions nationwide as of today, which includes rain showers, thunderstorms, and cloudy skies. 



These weather patterns can cause sudden floods or landslides and affect coastal regions with different wind intensities.

People are encouraged to stay updated on weather forecasts, take essential safety measures, keep an eye on their surroundings, and prepare for potential emergencies.
