On October 19 this year, Buck Tick’s vocalist, Atsushi Sakurai, passed away at just fifty-seven. Atshusi Sakurai’s death deeply devastated the band’s fans and the music community.

The band’s singer suddenly felt sick during a live performance at KT Zepp Yokohama. At 11:09 PM, the vocalist died from a brainstem hemorrhage after being rushed to the hospital.

The vocalist had just celebrated thirty-five years in the industry and commemorated his thirty-fifth year with a hometown concert in Gunma Music Center just last month. Plans for commemorating the late singer are still in motion; however, the late singer’s family has held a private funeral in his honor.

Sakurai and his Buck Tick bandmates originally debuted in 1987 when they were signed to Victor Invitation Records. The band has released numerous hits, which include “Just One More Kiss”. The band became prominent in Japanese rock in the late eighties to early nineties.

Buck Tick is considered one of the pioneers of visual kei, a subgenre under Japanese rock known for intricate visual presentations, gothic appearance, balladic melodies, and musicians who present themselves androgynously.

Ever since their debut in 1987, the band has remained intact and has never replaced their members. Just in April of this year, the band was able to release their twenty-third album, “Izora,” which placed second on the Oricon weekly album chart on the week it was released.

Sakurai was a native of Gunma, and his passing due to a brainstem hemorrhage shocked family, friends, fans, and associates.

Kunio Tago, a manager in a recording studio in Takasaki, shared, “He was already a superstar when he was in junior high school. He was such a cool person and looked like he came straight out of a manga.”

Tago started to form friendships with the members of Buck Tick in 2014, the same year he began managing the studio.

Takashi Kawanabe, organization committee head for a concert festival, City Rock Fes., which is set to occur in June of 2024, shared, “I’m shocked. (Buck Tick) was shortlisted as one of the bands taking part in the event.”

The music community continues to mourn the death of Buck Tick’s vocalist and shall continue to honor his legacy by celebrating his craft.
