Gov’t must hasten national ID delivery to support SIM registration
Advocacy group CitizenWatch Philippines says the government must speed up national ID delivery in order to make SIM registration easier and faster.
It says that Philsys or national ID could simply SIM card registration.
“The enforcement of the SIM Registration Act will also be facilitated by linking each SIM to a user’s PhilID making each call and SMS message traceable to the individual subscriber,” group convener Orlando Oxales said in a statement.
The group also believes that the national ID system would accelerate digital transformation for both public and private sectors.
Oxales added that the ID would not just be an ordinary card since “[v]alidation of a person’s identity establishes trust in the fulfillment of all kinds of transactions and opens up opportunities to participate in the fast-growing digital ecosystem successfully.”
The Philippine Identification System Act or Republic Act 11055 was signed into law by previous President Rodrigo Duterte on August 6, 2018 to create a single national identification system for Filipinos.
