The Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC) has raised its level to code red on Wednesday, July 28.

NMMC is the only COVID-19 referral hospital in Region 10, catering to its five provinces: Bukidnon, Camiguin, Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental, and Lanao del Norte, and two cities classified as highly urbanized—Cagayan de Oro City and Iligan City.

According to NMMC Liaison Officer Dr. Bernard Rocha, NMMC has intensified its contingency alert status to code red in response to the Department of Health (DOH) declaration of the code red alert 4 status in all centers of health development, ministry of health, and DOH-retained hospital.

“The code red is for us, the hospital personnel, para kabalo mi kung unsa among role karon sa hospital ug unsa’y mahitabo sa hospital (to know what our role will be and what will happen to the hospital),” he said.

Rocha said they increased their bed capacity for COVID-19 cases from 50 to 70 percent, while lowering the general services from 50 to 30 percent.

As of writing, there are a total of 210 beds dedicated for COVID-19 patients in NMMC. Meanwhile, the critical care capacity rose to 140.

The code red status also pushed the referral hospital to suspend its elective surgeries, except its hemodialysis and chemotherapy services which will continue in full capacity.
