Magnitude 5.7 earthquake hits Masbate

MASBATE, PHILIPPINES — At 2:10 am today, February 16, 2023, Masbate was hit with a magnitude 5.7 earthquake.

According to PHIVOLCS’ official earthquake bulletin board, the earthquake was tectonic in origin and was located at 12.42°N, 123.83°E – 006 km N 68° E of Batuan, Masbate.

Masbate City’s reported instrumental intensity was Intensity IV.

Patients of the Masbate Provincial Hospital were evacuated from the building when the earthquake struck.



According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), a total of 39 aftershocks followed the magnitude 5.7 earthquake. Around 19 of these 39 aftershocks are plotted while five were felt, said the NDRRMC. The aftershocks’ magnitudes also range from 1.6 to 4.2.

No major damages have been reported. However, local NDRRMC units have been deployed to assess all damages.

Classes and work have been suspended for the entire province through the City Mayor’s official memorandum to “ensure the safety of everyone and to pave way for monitoring and inspection.”

Some of the damages reported include Magallanes Coliseum in Masbate City. Masbate PDRRMO also said, “upon assessment, hairline cracks were noticed, but no major damage was reported.” – WhatALife!
