A birth certificate contains information on your identity, citizenship, and family history. When you apply for licenses, identification cards, and official papers for education and job, you usually need to present your birth certificate. The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) is where you may get this document.

What is a Birth Certificate?

The birth certificate is issued soon after a person is born, after the mother’s doctor submits the necessary paperwork to the relevant government office, typically the neighborhood civil registrar’s office.

The official birth certificate is kept at LCR, and records are held at the NSO for archival purposes. The birth certificate is used to verify a person’s identity and nationality and to facilitate the acquisition of identification papers provided by the government, such as a passport or driver’s license. In addition, in countries where citizenship is based on place of birth, having a birth certificate helps prove citizenship easier.

What is the Purpose of a PSA Birth Certificate?

A birth certificate is a formal record used to confirm a person’s birth. Additionally, it is the foundation for determining a person’s legitimacy as a party to a transaction or contract. The following situations frequently call for a birth certificate:

  • Identification (driver’s license, national ID, and other government-issued IDs)
  • Passport/travel purposes
  • Local/foreign employment
  • School requirements
  • Marriage
  • Loans
  • Claims/Benefits
