Delfin Añora Jr., a senior citizen tricycle driver from Barangay Baan Riverside in Butuan City, has been recognized by the city government for returning a red envelope containing P300,000 in cash left by a passenger on his tricycle.

Añora handed over the misplaced envelope along with essential documents to local broadcaster DXBC-Radio Mindanao Network.

According to him, the driver of another tricycle informed him about the fallen envelope, prompting him to stop and inspect it. Upon discovering the substantial amount of money, he returned it directly.

According to Añora, the honesty of the values instilled in him emphasizes that his faith in God guided his decision.

“If God gives it, it’s rightfully ours, but if not, we should not take it, as only God knows what he will reward us with,” he expressed.

The owner of the misplaced cash, a resident of Barangay Obrero, claimed the money after the radio station, managed by Ramil Bangues, contacted him using the information found in the documents.

Impressed by Añora’s honesty, a listener of DXBC’s evening radio program offered to give him P5,000, while another pledged to donate a sack of rice.

On February 28, the Butuan City Council passed a resolution authored by Councilor Cherry Busa, commending Delfin Añora Jr. for his exemplary character and honesty.

The resolution expresses the city government’s appreciation through an honorary reward for Añora’s commendable act, setting an example for all citizens of the city.

Councilor John Gil Unay Sr., chair of the city council’s committee on franchises and licenses, expressed his intention to propose an ordinance that would automatically grant financial incentives for similar commendable acts by public utility vehicle drivers in the city.

This incident echoes a previous recognition in May 2021 when another tricycle driver in Butuan, Jervin Udarte Abuzo, returned a bag containing P20,000 and important documents left by a passenger, showcasing that honesty and goodness persist in society.
