MANILA, Philippines – Actress Toni Gonzaga is returning to the big screen as the lead in the Filipino remake of the successful South Korean film ‘My Sassy Girl’.
Viva Films revealed on their social media platforms that the movie, directed by Fifth Solomon, is scheduled for a nationwide cinema release on January 31.
“The long wait is over! She’s here! She’s back! And she’s sassy! Toni Gonzaga is #MySassyGirl,” Viva Films said.
“Here’s the official poster for the Philippine adaptation of the most beloved South Korean romantic comedy film, ‘MY SASSY GIRL’. Starring Pepe Herrera and Toni Gonzaga, and directed by Fifth Solomon. January 31 in cinemas!” they added.
“Watch out for the #MySassyGirlTrailer very soon,” they concluded the post caption.
Pepe Herrera is set to co-star alongside Toni, and the cast also includes Yayo Aguila, Alma Moreno, Benj Manalo, Bodjie Pascua, Boboy Garrovillo, and Joey Paras.
The production company announced that the official trailer for the film will be released shortly.
In January 2021, Toni shared her excitement, expressing that portraying the lead role in a Philippine adaptation was the realization of a long-held dream.
“I won’t forget that,” Toni said about “My Sassy Girl,” which she watched while shooting a movie in Pampanga.
“Director Cathy said, ‘Watch ‘Sassy Girl.’ That’s our peg for you. You should be like that, somewhat feisty’,” Toni added.
For Toni, taking on the role of the main character is a significant blessing.
“Twenty years after the film was released, I’m given the opportunity to play the role here in the Philippines. I consider it a big blessing,” she said.
“My Sassy Girl” is a South Korean romantic comedy film released in 2001, featuring Jun Ji-hyun and Cha Tae-hyun in the lead roles. At one point, it held the title of South Korea’s most commercially successful comedy and was among the top five highest-grossing films in the country.
