Former PBB Big Winner, social media personality, and entrepreneur Slater Young sits down with his father, John Young, in a one-on-one interview. Here, the father-son duo talks about life as an engineer, Slater’s upbringing, the lessons his dad taught him, and advice from one father to another.

On social media, Slater is known as an engineer and vlogger. He is also the husband of Kryz Uy and the father of their three sons. A few facts you may not know about him include that he runs Liteblock, Slater Young’s construction company that produces blocks for residential and commercial projects. You may also know them for their popular home in Cebu, the Skypod.

Slater Young’s family business includes his father’s steel manufacturing company. During the interview, it was mentioned that John was an OFW and contractor for residential and commercial projects in Cebu before venturing into steel.

The interview starts with Slater asking his dad if they were this comfortable. His dad talks about his life in Dipolog City as a kid and says they weren’t rich, but they never had to worry about basic needs.

Slater points out that he recalls his dad telling stories about diluting soft drinks when guests were over. However, his dad was very fond and happy with his life and childhood in Dipolog.

The pair then proceeded to talk about how John became an engineer. The Young patriarch shared that he initially wanted to pursue medicine. However, his mother only had enough money to support one child through the field. At that point, his older brother was already aiming for a career in medicine. 

Slater Young’s father shared about his time abroad. He says that he took the time to learn more about the field during his free time, which led to him gaining more knowledge in the field and, ultimately, his success.

His son then asked him why that was his mindset. Was it innate? Did he have other ambitions? John answered, “I just didn’t want to waste my time, so I studied.” 

Furthermore, John Young’s Cebu life and his business weren’t always as successful. Eventually, he had to take out a loan to expand his business. In line with this, he shares that he is always thankful to those who trusted him when he needed extra cash to grow his company.

Before, the Young family lived in a humble apartment. It was also very Chinese, with a home on the upper level and a business on the ground floor. 

When discussing being a father, John shared why he had such a good relationship with Slater Young and his siblings. The patriarch shared that a TV program changed his parenting. 

This TV program showed a father who lost his son in a workplace accident. When asked how he felt about losing a son who helped him, the father answered that he was sadder that he lost his best friend. Since then, John strived to be his kids’ best friend and dad.
