CEBU CITY, PHILIPPINES — As the Holy Week commenced, the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral in the Visayas region of the Philippines became a hub of devotion as devout Catholics gathered to participate in the live sculpture interpretation of the Passion of Christ on Wednesday, April 5, 2023.

The performance was produced by Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc.’s Casa Gorordo Museum and performed by Safespace Association’s Cross Living Sculpture Presentation to celebrate its 40th anniversary as a public museum.

The live presentation showcased the 14-step Catholic devotion depicting the Stations of the Cross.

This solemn and reflective ceremony is a significant part of the Holy Week observance, commemorating the journey of Jesus Christ to his crucifixion.

The live Stations of the Cross, also known as the Via Crucis, is a reenactment of the passion and death of Jesus Christ. Participants, dressed in biblical costumes, portrayed the characters and events of the Stations, following a designated route within the basilica’s premises. The event was accompanied by prayers, hymns, and reflections led by the clergy, creating a reverent atmosphere.

Despite the ongoing pandemic, the faithful observed health protocols, including wearing face masks and maintaining physical distancing, as they joined the live Stations of the Cross. Many carried candles, while others carried small crosses or rosaries, signifying their deep faith and devotion.

The 14-step devotional exercise has been a significant tradition in Cebu City, drawing pilgrims and tourists from all over the country and beyond. It is a solemn and reflective way for the faithful to commemorate the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and to meditate on his journey to Calvary.

For many Filipinos, the live Stations of the Cross was not only a religious event but also a personal and spiritual experience. Many expressed how the reenactment helped them to better understand and appreciate the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and to reflect on their own lives and faith.
