The attack was condemned by the Palestinian organization Hamas as a component of Israel’s “war of genocide and ethnic cleansing.”
The statement went on to say, “One of the pillars of the Israeli war on Gaza is the systematic starvation and deprivation of humanitarian aid to our people.”
Following a cross-border attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023, which Tel Aviv reported killed approximately 1,200 people, Israel has begun a deadly military offensive on the Gaza Strip.
Since then, there have been at least 30,410 Palestinian deaths in Gaza—primarily women and children—and 71,700 injuries due to widespread devastation and a lack of basic supplies.
Israel has also put a harsh suppression on Gaza, which puts its people at risk of going hungry, especially those who live in the northern part of the territory where the killings happened on Thursday.
The UN says that the Israeli war, which is now in its 149th day, has damaged or destroyed 60% of the enclave’s infrastructure and forced 85% of its people to leave their homes because they can’t get enough food, clean water, or medicine.
The International Court of Justice has charged Israel with genocide. In January, an interim verdict mandated that Tel Aviv cease its acts of genocide and take steps to ensure that residents in Gaza get humanitarian aid.
