Donald Glover and Maya Erskine are set to star in the eight-episode series remake of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” this 2024.
The iconic married assassins from the hit film “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” are returning in a television reboot of the 2005 movie. Actor and musician Donald Glover and writer Francesca Sloane are co-developing this eight-episode series. It provides a fresh interpretation of the characters originally played by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie almost twenty years ago.
“The last bits of it are a lot like the movie but it’s pretty different actually,” said Glover as he premiered the show in London on Wednesday, January 17.
“They’re differently set up. We have a lot more time to do things, too,” he added.
The TV series, also named “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” follows two unconventional individuals, portrayed by Donald Glover and Maya Erskine. They engage in a unique recruitment process to secure positions at an international spy agency and find themselves matched in an undercover marriage.
Assuming the identities of John and Jane Smith, the couple faces the challenge of proving their espionage abilities to their new superiors while navigating the complexities of sharing their daily lives with a stranger.
“I guess I just wanted to make a show about relationships because I think I’ve entered into a time in my life where it’s like, oh, more relationship talk, so it was fun to do that,” Glover said.
Before the series premiered, showrunner Francesca Sloane wrote an open letter addressing “internet trolls” who raised doubts about the necessity of the remake.
“I wanted to be very realistic about the fact that we understood where they were coming from,” she said.
Donald Glover has shared that he had a conversation with Brad Pitt before assuming Pitt’s character in the TV adaptation of Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
Speaking at the premiere in London, Glover joked to the Press Association: “I’m just like Brad Pitt, just like him, I think he would say that too.”
“I actually got to talk to him about it. I just wanted to make a character that felt like everyman, it’s on purpose their names are John and Jane, you kind of put the character on them,” he said.
The 2005 release of ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ featured Hollywood stars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The film successfully blended action, comedy, and romance, becoming a blockbuster hit.
Donald Glover’s upcoming adaptation is highly anticipated to capture the essence of the original while introducing a fresh narrative perspective.
