In an effort to curb the continuing rise of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) infection, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) issued an additional requirement to the public when traveling via public transportation. Aside from social distancing and wearing face masks, wearing a face shield is now part of the mandatory health protocol, also as recommended by the Department of Health (DOH).
With this, a group of Cotabato farmers led by a young agricultural engineer is now starting to produce and market bamboo face shields.
Engr. Junroe Barrios, a young Agricultural Engineer from M’lang, Cotabato, designed an eco-friendly face shield and produced by members of the Central Mindanao Green Workers Association and sold for P80 per piece.
Bambuhay Philippines, a multi-awarded social enterprise focus in a circular economy that innovates eco-friendly products to heal the planet from plastic pollution, deforestation, and climate change and simultaneously empower marginalized communities of farmers.
The P80.00 is the production cost. Consequently, the face shields are sold for Php 150 in Davao Region and Php 200 for orders from other regions. This is to properly compensate for the efforts and expertise of the participating farmers, securing a fair trade.
The newly established enterprise has divided the production of the phase, starting from the stripping of the bamboo slats to the curing, attaching of the plastic shield, disinfecting, and packaging.
Moreover, all are working from home and need more support to build a formal and orderly manufacturing area complete with working tables, stripping equipment, and sanitary equipment.
