The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) is celebrating its fifth anniversary, with the transitional government reflecting on the region’s advancements since 2019.

Following a parade featuring employees from both the regional and Cotabato City governments in Cotabato City, the event unfolded. The parade commenced from Governor Gutierrez Avenue and moved towards the Bangsamoro Government Center, situated just outside and in front of the government complex compound.

In his anniversary statement, Ebrahim highlighted the significance of cultivating mutual understanding, promoting peaceful coexistence, and envisioning a collective future in the Bangsamoro.

“Let this day serve as a reminder to all of us that the path to peace and autonomy demanded several decades of persistent struggle and sacrifices, especially of the Bangsamoro mujahideen and those who devoted themselves to ensuring the necessary conditions for enduring peace and socio-economic development in the Autonomous Region,” Ebrahim said.

Ebrahim stated that BARMM is observing five years of dynamic development and solidarity, establishing the groundwork for a more promising future for the Bangsamoro homeland. The theme for this year’s BARMM celebration revolves around “Advancing mutual understanding, peaceful coexistence, and a shared future in the Bangsamoro.”

A range of anniversary events, organized by various BARMM ministries, is scheduled from January 21 to 26 for the weeklong celebration. Activities encompass free legal aid and medical outreach programs, tree planting initiatives, and cleanup activities, among other events.

The BARMM stands as the sole region in the country to have a regional government, and notably, it operates under a parliamentary system.

Its establishment came into effect following a plebiscite held on January 21, 2019. Subsequently, on February 26, 2019, a turnover occurred, replacing the now-defunct Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

This year alone, BARMM has a budget of P98.4 billion from a block grant that has been incorporated in its Bangsamoro Expenditure Program (BEP).
