Ateneo, ADMU share lead in UAAP men's tennis

Ateneo de Manila University’s (ADMU) rookie sensation, John David Velez, secured a crucial win against the University of the East (UE), leading the Blue Eagles to a 3-2 triumph in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 86 men’s tennis tournament.

In a showdown at the Felicisimo Ampon Tennis Center, ADMU’s men’s tennis squad showcased their talent, clinching a hard-fought victory against the UE Red Warriors.

The defining moment came courtesy of rookie prodigy John David Velez, whose exceptional performance propelled the Blue Eagles to a resounding 3-2 triumph over their rivals.

Hailing from Ormoc City, the 21-year-old displayed a blend of skill and determination as he overcame UE’s Marc Suson with a score of 6-4, 7-5, marking his name in the record of Ateneo’s bright tennis legacy.

Speaking in the aftermath of the exciting encounter, head coach Gee Abacan emotionally praised Velez’s display, underscoring the important role played by the rookie sensation in securing a crucial win for the Blue Eagles.

“When we play against UE, it’s always been 3-2, not 4-1 nor 5-0; it’s really hard, I’m happy Velez won because imagine 6-0 in the first set and he got cramps” coach Abacan stated.

With this decisive win, Ateneo is now atop the standings alongside defending champions University of Sto. Tomas (UST), both teams boast immaculate 2-0 records.

UE suffered a setback, falling to its first defeat in three outings, thereby underscoring the sharp competitiveness of this year’s edition of the UAAP Season 86 men’s tennis tournament.

In a similar situation, UST showcased its championship pedigree, showing a commanding 4-1 victory against the University of the Philippines, propelled by the performance of Season 85 MVP Nilo Ledama.

De La Salle University secured its maiden win in three starts, dispatching Adamson University with ease in a comprehensive 4-1 triumph, further amplifying the intensity of competition in the UAAP Season 86 men’s tennis tournament.
