Henry Sy, Sr. and Felicidad T. Sy founded the SM Foundation in 1983, but it wasn’t until 1993 when the foundation opened its doors for the first batch of college scholars. The SM College Scholarship program aims to support poverty-stricken youth to reach their full potential and achieve their dreams through education.
As of writing, the SM College Foundation has supported over 4,000 college scholars and more than 4,000
Technical-vocational scholars.
Listed below are the program’s guidelines, benefits, as well as its partner schools.
SM College Scholarship Qualifications
Junior and Senior high schools who graduated from a public school are eligible for the program and private high school graduates with DepEd vouchers. The following covered areas are qualified for the scholarship program:
- Luzon: NCR, Albay, Bataan, Batangas, Benguet, Bulacan, Cagayan, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Cavite, Isabela, Laguna, Nueva Ecija, Palawan, Pampanga, Pangasinan, Sorsogon, Quezon, Rizal, Tarlac, Zambales
- Visayas: Capiz, Cebu, Iloilo, Leyte. Negros Occidental
- Mindanao: Agusan del Norte, Davao del Sur, Misamis Oriental, South Cotabato, Zamboanga del Sur
Likewise, the applicant must also have a general weighted average grade of at least 88% or equivalent for Grade 12 during the first semester. The total household income must also have at most Php 150,000 per year.

Application process
STEP 1: Apply online
Visit at www.sm-foundation.org, accomplish the online application, and upload all required documents.
STEP 2: Confirmation of Application
Log-in to the SM Scholarship Online System to confirm application within 7 days of submission. Take note that the inability to confirm online will render the application void.
STEP 3: Process & evaluation
The foundation will assess submitted application forms and documents. The applicant will receive an email notification regarding the status of the application (e.g. “Declined” or “For Exam”)
STEP 4: Examination
The exam schedule and venue will be sent via email. Passers will be announced on the same day as the exam.
STEP 5: Interview
Exam passers will be interviewed individually by the SM Foundation on the same day of the exam.
STEP 6: Home visit
The SM Foundation team will conduct random home visits to applicants who passed the interview. An applicant who does not qualify after the home visit will be notified via email.
STEP 7: Confirmation of School & course
Successful applicants will be notified via email to confirm the school and course.
STEP 8: Orientation and contract signing
An email notification with the schedule of orientation and contract signing will be sent to the applicant.
