MANILA, PHILIPPINES —  As of January 28, 2023, the total SIM card registered is now at 15 percent or 26 million, according to the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC).

A total of 26,637,515 SIM cards have been registered, or only 15 percent of the 168 million subscribers.

In the SIM registration update table, Smart Communications Inc. has the highest number of registered users at 13,632,034 or 20.05 percent of its 67 million total subscribers.

Globe Telecom Inc. follows with 10,883,887 registered users or 12.39 percent of its 87 million subscribers. Meanwhile, DITO Telecommunity now has over 2,121,594 registered users or 16.19 percent of its 13 million total subscribers.

SIM card registration to end on April 26

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has reminded the public that SIM card registration will only last until April 26, 2023.

“We want to remind the public to register early because all unregistered SIMs will be deactivated once the registration period ends on April 26, 2023,” said DICT Spokesperson Anna Mae Lamentillo.

However, various groups have urged the ICT agency to revert the original deadline to June 27, 2023, which follows the 180-day period stated in the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) of the SIM Card Registration Act (RA 11934).

“The SIM registration law says that the subscribers have 180 days to register their SIM cards,” Digital Pinoys national campaigner Ronald Gustilo said Saturday in a statement, adding, “December 27, 2022 is the effectivity date of the law and the 180th day is June 25, 2023.”

Albay Representative Joey Salceda, chair of the House of Ways and Means, also noted that the decision was “premature since we don’t know how quickly most Filipinos will be able to register.”

At the moment, the DICT stands with its April 26 deadline.
