The 81st annual Golden Globes 2024 awards night was held for three hours at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, hosted by Jo Koy at 8pm on Sunday, January 7.
The evening, celebrating accomplishments in both film and television, marks the beginning of an eagerly anticipated awards season, accompanied by the dazzling display of fashion.
“The awards are Hollywood’s biggest party and our red carpet partnership will allow millions to have a front row seat to all the fun,” said Erin Johnson, the executive producer of Entertainment Tonight in a statement.
Variety’s co-editors-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh and Cynthia Littleton said, “Variety is delighted to collaborate with the Golden Globes and ET on covering the buzziest red carpet in Hollywood.”
This year, Variety and Entertainment Tonight have collaborated with the Golden Globes to create the online red carpet pre-show, featuring unique footage and interviews with celebrities in attendance.
Barbie and Succession lead the nominations for the night, both securing nine nominations each, closely followed by Oppenheimer with eight nominations. Other notable contenders include Killers of the Flower Moon, Poor Things, Past Lives, and The Bear.
Additionally, the Globes are introducing a groundbreaking category tonight: Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. This new award recognizes high-grossing films, acknowledging some that might not typically receive these esteemed nominations. Notable nominees in this category include Barbenheimer, which notably performed well in theaters during the summer, along with Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, John Wick: Chapter 4, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and The Super Mario Bros. Movies, comprising the inaugural class of nominees.
In a significant shift, this year’s ceremony will be aired live on CBS, marking the first time in decades under a new agreement between the Golden Globes and the network. Additionally, the Golden Globes 2024 event will be accessible for streaming on Paramount+ and the CBS app, with Paramount Global serving as the parent company of CBS.
