The origin of Friday the 13th can be traced back centuries, specifically through the number ‘13’. It has long been considered unlucky or taboo in many cultures. In fact, the number 13 is widely feared in so many beliefs that it has its own designated phobia: “triskaidekaphobia.”
One of the most widely recognized origins comes from the Christian Bible. Judas, the person who is said to have betrayed Jesus, was the 13th guest at the Last Supper. Historical events also influence the concept of the “curse” of Friday the 13th. Specifically, on October 13, 1307, King Philip IV of France ordered the arrest of the Knights Templar.

Even in the current age, the day is still widely feared among many people around the world. It’s global recognition influenced its place in various media. One of the most famous is the “Friday the 13th” film franchise, which became a horror genre classic.
The Philippines is also aware of and believes in the concept of Friday the 13th due to its superstitious beliefs. Back in 2023, the country experienced multiple quakes and train disruptions on October 13th, which was on a Friday. It was even trending on local social media at the time.
It is said that on this day, Pinoys must follow what to and what not to do during this day. Some notable examples include:
- If three people will take a photo/selfie on this day, the one in the middle will die.
- After visiting a funeral, drivers must take a detour to get rid of spirits.
- One should not sweep their homes at night, as this will remove one’s wealth.
For the next year, Friday the 13th of 2025 will appear in June.
