Weather Update: Typhoon ‘Ambo’ makes landfall in Catanuan, Quezon

Typhoon Ambo continues to bring destructive winds and heavy to intense rainfall over Catanuan, Quezon and approaching to Northern Quezon – Laguna area as of 11 AM on Friday, May 15.   Given the international name Vongfong, made six landfalls so far – once in Eastern Samar (12:15 PM, May 14), twice in Northern Samar (10:15 PM & 10:30 PM, May 14), twice in Masbate province (12:00 AM & 3:00 AM, May 15), and most recently in San Andres town at 7:45 AM today, the state weather bureau PAGASA said. Ambo is now moving Northwest at 20 km/h.

In the bulletin issued 11 AM on Friday, PAGASA said Ambo has decreased its maximum sustained winds of 155 km/h (5 PM yesterday) to 125 km/h and gustiness from 255 km/h to 165 km/h. Moreover, moderate to heavy with at times intense rains over Bicol Region, Quezon, Aurora, Marinduque, Laguna, Rizal, Metro Manila, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Nueva Vizcaya, and Quirino. Meanwhile, storm surge with the height of up to 2.0 meters may be experienced over the coastal areas of Bicol Region, Quezon, and Aurora in the next 24 hours, which may result in potentially life-threatening coastal inundation.   Below are the wind signals ranging from one to three for some parts of Luzon and Visayas:

  • The southern portion of Nueva Ecija (Licab, Quezon, Santo Domingo, Talavera, Llanera, Rizal,Bongabon, General Mamerto Natividad, Aliaga, Zaragoza, San Antonio, Jaen, Santa Rosa, Cabanatuan, Palayan, Laur, Gabaldon, Peñaranda, San Leonardo, Cabiao, San Isidro, Gapan, General Tinio)
  • The eastern portion of Bulacan (San Miguel, San Ildefonso, Dona Remedios Trinidad, San Rafael, Angat, Norzagaray, San Jose Del Monte)
  • The western portion of Camarines Norte (Santa Elena, Capalonga, Jose Panganiban, Paracale, Labo)
  • The extreme western portion of Camarines Sur (Del Gallego, Ragay, Lupi, Sipocot, Libmanan, Cabusao, Pasacao, Pamplona)

  PAGASA advised residents in these areas to take appropriate measures, coordinate with local disaster risk reduction and management offices, and continue monitoring for updates. Flooding and rain-induced landslides may also occur in highly susceptible areas during heavy or prolonged rainfall. The next Severe Weather Bulletin to be issued by the state weather bureau will be at 2 PM today.   —(Source: PAGASA) Ambo’s arrival comes as the Philippines faces the coronavirus outbreak, with 11,876 cases as of Thursday.
