An 80-year-old woman lost her life, and 52 others were injured when a termite-damaged mezzanine collapsed during Ash Wednesday Mass at St. Peter the Apostle Parish Church.
The incident sent shockwaves through the community as worshippers gathered for a solemn observance.
The wooden balcony, situated on the right side of the church, gave way, resulting in chaos and devastation.
Among the victims, Luneta Morales, a cherished choir member of the church, tragically perished, leaving the congregation in mourning.
According to the CDRRMO head, termites were the cause of the collapsed mezzanine, by the findings of the City Engineering Office and the Office of the City Building authorities.
Ayson said the wooden mezzanine was built about 30 years ago.
First responders swiftly arrived at the scene, rushing the injured to various hospitals for urgent medical attention.
While some sustained minor injuries and were discharged after treatment, others faced more severe conditions, highlighting the severity of the collapse.
Despite undergoing renovations, the old mezzanine area of the church remained unchanged, ultimately leading to the catastrophic failure.
Mayor Arthur Robes promptly ordered the temporary closure of the church pending assessment by the city’s building and engineering offices to determine the cause and extent of the structural damage.
In a gesture of solidarity and support, the city government announced plans to cover the medical expenses of those injured in the incident, aiming to ease the burden on affected families during this difficult time.
The tragic events unfolded before approximately 400 worshippers gathered for the Ash Wednesday Mass, leaving the community reeling from the loss and injuries incurred in the wake of the collapse.
As investigations continue and the community mourns the loss of life, questions arise regarding the safety protocols and maintenance practices surrounding the church’s infrastructure.
