President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. lauded Apo Whang Od’s dedication to preserving Philippine traditional arts, presenting her with prestigious awards at the Civil Service Commission’s Honor Awards Program (HAP).

Marcos commended Apo Whang Od’s unwavering commitment to preserving indigenous cultural heritage through her mastery of traditional hand-tapped tattooing, known as “batok” or “batek.”

The tattoo artist’s exceptional skill and dedication to her craft have garnered international recognition, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines on a global platform.

Her intricate designs, created using traditional tools such as thorns, bamboo sticks, and charcoal ink, embody the cultural and spiritual significance of the Kalinga people.



As one of the last remaining mambabatok (traditional tattoo artists) in the Kalinga region, Apo Whang Od plays a pivotal role in safeguarding and promoting indigenous tattooing traditions.

The recognition bestowed upon the tattoo artist underscores her profound impact on Philippine traditional arts and culture.

Through her artistry and dedication, she has preserved a vital aspect of the country’s heritage, ensuring that future generations can continue to appreciate and celebrate their cultural identity.

President Marcos emphasized her invaluable contribution to the preservation of Philippine traditional arts. 



He praised her tireless efforts in promoting cultural heritage and acknowledged her role as a cultural ambassador for the Philippines. 

Apo Whang Od has garnered global acclaim on account of her distinctive abilities and cultural significance. 

International tourists flock to her village, Buscalan, with the intention of obtaining her tattoos and gaining knowledge about Kalinga culture.



Numerous awards and distinctions have been bestowed upon her, among them the National Living Treasures Award.

This acknowledges people who have contributed significantly to the traditional arts and culture of the Philippines.

The awards ceremony served as a tribute to Apo Whang Od’s remarkable legacy, honoring her dedication to preserving and promoting the rich tapestry of Philippine culture.
