The Exciting World of Meta AI

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg launched Meta AI Llama 3.1 on July 23, 2024. Here’s what you need to know about this latest development in Meta AI.

Meta touts Llama 3.1, which stands for Large Language Model Meta AI, as the largest open-source AI model, claiming it outperforms competitors like GPT-4 and Google Gemini. This advanced technology delivers human-quality content in mere seconds.

Compared to its predecessor, Llama 3.1 is significantly more complex, featuring the largest version with an impressive 405 billion parameters. Meta is also rolling it out in various countries and languages. Additionally, Meta plans to introduce features for generating images, audio, and even videos in the future.

Llama 3.1 stands out because it is accessible for free to anyone. Developers can tailor the AI to meet specific needs, allowing for greater flexibility. Meta trained this advanced AI using over 16,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs, although the company has not disclosed the training costs.

Mark Zuckerberg explained that Meta’s decision to offer Llama 3.1 with just an approval requirement stems from the rapid advancement of open-source AI models, which are outpacing proprietary ones. He noted that this strategy has saved the company “billions” by relying on trusted outsourcing partners like HP.

To facilitate the global launch of Meta AI Llama 3.1, the company has collaborated with more than two dozen firms, including major players like Microsoft, Amazon, Nvidia, and Google.

The choice to adopt an open-source model sparked significant controversy among skeptics. Proponents of closed models argue that Meta’s approach poses potential dangers. Some Washington lobbyists warn that the Meta AI could be weaponized by adversaries if misused.

Meta asserts that the open-source model will implement strict guidelines to ensure a level playing field. They also indicated that countries will be monitored over time. Zuckerberg anticipates that by the end of the year, Meta AI Llama 3.1 will become the most-utilized source, potentially surpassing ChatGPT, which boasts over 1 billion users globally.
