Shaina Magdayao, 35, reflected on her long journey as an actress in the Philippine showbiz industry in an interview with Roni Hirshberg in Empower Hour.
Magdayao, who has been in the industry since she was 6 years old, shared the challenges she faced particularly in the common practices she doesn’t conform to.
“I grew up in the industry that can be very toxic and challenging,” she opened up, “but it can also put pressure for you to conform and do a certain image.”
Shaina detailed the common practice of management in forming “love teams.”
“It’s huge back [in the Philippines],” she remarked, “but I did not gravitate towards that.”
“I may have lost some opportunities, but I definitely gained more by proving that I can be partnered with different kinds of leading men,” she added.
The actress also confided about a trend in the industry where they transition child actors into adult roles by adopting a more mature image.
“It was a trend back home, years ago, when they had to transition child actors to be like a woman in the industry,” she pointed out, “and you have to do that by posing on a men’s magazine.”
Magdayao said she had so much respect for the women who conformed to the practice, but for her case she had to propose an alternative with her management.
“I really pleaded with my management to not pressure me to go towards that path,” she said.
She then elaborated, “I said that in exchange, I would just like to portray more mature roles.”
Shaina expressed that although things didn’t go smoothly at first, the fact that she is still in the industry may mean she made the right choices.
