The Philippine National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has advised public telecommunication entities and internet service providers to prepare for a surge in internet traffic this Christmas season.
In a memorandum issued Friday, December 17, NTC Commissioner Gamaliel Cordoba noted that internet traffic is “projected to increase considerably” during the holidays.
“Despite the decrease in (COVID-19) cases, the Department of Health is encouraging the holding in Christmas parties virtually due to the Omicron coronavirus threat,” he said.
Cordoba emphasized that telcos and internet service providers should observe a “heightened level of emergency preparedness” from December 17, 2021, to January 7, 2022, to ensure “minimal disruption and downtime strictly complying with the prescribed service performance standard at all times.”
The NTC Commissioner also directed these entities to speed up their maintenance efforts, increase internet or broadband capacities, and ensure that business continuity and disaster recovery protocols are functioning 24 hours a day.
“You (telcos and internet service providers) are hereby directed to fast track your maintenance efforts, increase internet/broadband capacities, and ensure that business continuity and disaster recovery protocols are in place and functioning, 24/7,” Cordoba said. – WhatALife.ph
