SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA — Korean actor Nam Joo-hyuk begins his mandatory military service starting March 20, leaving fans to bid him farewell and wish him well during his absence.
As per South Korean legislation, all physically healthy men must serve 18 months in the military before they reach 30. This is seen as a patriotic duty and an opportunity to contribute to the country’s defense. Many Korean celebrities, including actors, have also served in the military.
According to reports, the actor auditioned for and was approved for a military police unit. Joo-hyuk’s admittance ceremony will take place behind closed doors. Additionally, he will finish his military obligation with the SWAT unit.
Last month, Management SOOP, Joo-hyuk’s agency, confirmed that he had been accepted into the military police force. The news of his enlistment has garnered attention from fans worldwide, with his name trending on Twitter Philippines on the day of his departure.
Fans have expressed their sadness at his departure, but they have also sent him well wishes and messages of support during his absence.
