ILIGAN CITY — Two out of four passengers of a Mitsubishi Montero were injured when the car fell off a damaged bridge in Sitio Merila, Barangay Ubaldo D. Laya in Iligan, on June 22.
At 12:45 a.m. on June 22, a Montero falls off the Merila Bridge which connects Barangays Ubaldo Laya and Tubod, said Maj. Zandrex Panolong, spokesperson of the Iligan City Police Office.
The bridge was damaged due to a strong flood last March 7. However, the driver Abdullah G. Rasol, 34, of Bacolod Kalawi in Lanao del Sur, said he did not know that the bridge had collapsed previously, nor did he see the warning sign late in the night.
According to the investigation, the travellers were driving from Iligan’s circumferential diversion road (or C3 road) in Merila, then turned right where the bridge crosses the Tubod River.
The bridge looked normal when coming from C3. Unfortunately, it gradually inclines towards the left since one side of the other end (in Barangay Tubod) fell to the river bed.
After speeding through the wet steel bridge, the Montero nose-dived down a concrete slab below when it reached the broken end of the bridge.
It was still suspended front-end first down the concrete slab when police came to investigate.
Rescuers brought Joharisah Ali and Sittie Iman Sanguan, the two passengers injured by the incident, to the Gregorio T. Lluch Memorial Hospital for immediate medical treatment.
A resident in the area, Albhenor Ali, said that two motorcycles also fell off the bridge since it was damaged in March. – WhatALife!
