Misgendering Issue Goes Viral in Cebu

Local Cebu personality Jude Bacalso went viral in a Facebook post by John Calderon. In the post, the host is seen having a waiter stand for nearly two hours after misgendering her.

The post says that a mother and son (Calderon) were at Ayala Center Cebu and saw a waiter from the restaurant Ulli’s standing for nearly two hours. Sitting in front of him was Cebu personality Jude Bacalso.

The waiter reportedly began to stand at six in the evening, which was the case since Calderon and his mother intervened. The concerned citizens approached Jude and asked her what the problem was. To this, she answered, “Go ask him (the server) what happened.”

When Calderon turned to the server, he answered, “Natawag nako siya’g sir” (I called him sir.) After this, Calderon grabbed the server and brought him to their staff room. During this, the waiter reportedly broke down, appearing to have a panic attack after standing for almost two hours straight.

Additionally, according to Calderon’s original post, other servers tried to intervene, and no supervisor was present during this period.

Wrapping up his post, Calderon said, “Also, you voicing for LGBTQ? For that mere mistake sa server, is that how you want to influence? Part ko sa LGBT myself and you bring shame sa atong community na grabe ka nakayatak sa katungod sa tawo. I am calling you out and you being held accountable sa imong actions.”

Translation: Also, you voicing for LGBTQ? For the mere mistake of the server, is that how you want to influence? I am part of the LGBTQ myself, and you bring shame to our community that is already trampled because of people. I am calling you out and holding you accountable for your actions.

Since the issue involving Jude Bacalso went viral, numerous netizens sided with Calderon and expressed their support for the waiter. However, multiple netizens continued to misgender the local personality.

One user writes, “I will still call him Sir, Why? Nso Birth Certificate ta mag daog kung Male Sya Sir jud sya bisan unsaon og baliktad😆😆 Maghulat ta og balaod na naay additional Gender nga options sa manga I.D..pero as of now be contented nalang sa ta noh”

On the other hand, one Facebook user writes that what Jude did was not right, but this isn’t how advocating for the LGBTQ community should be. The user added that being an ally means standing for what is right and continuing to respect LQBTQ pronouns.

Another user comments, “If it is not intentional to call you Sir/Ma’am which is opposite of what you want to be called, then just be kind and educate them. People are still trying to understand SOGIE. Do not be overpowered by entitlement.”

Furthermore, some comments assured the waiter that he did nothing wrong. A commenter said, “Wala kang kasalanan kuya ❤️ Being there and able to listen for 2 hours already defines the kind of person you are. You must be a good employee!”

Since then, Jude Bacalso has issued her statement, along with the restaurant Ulli’s.

In the comments numerous netizens have flooded the comments, continuing to call Jude Bacalso sir.
