MANILA, PHILIPPINES — Following in the footsteps of successful Mindanao artists such as Arthur Nery, DJ Loonyo, and TJ Monterde, a new wave of music talents from the southern region of the Philippines is poised to make their mark on the local music scene.
In a Zoom interview with The STAR, emerging artists Jean Alejandro, Nier V, and Chinoy Valmorida introduced their unique brand of music. They discussed why now is an opportune time for indie and regional musicians, emphasizing the significance of digital platforms and the need to thrive amidst popular foreign music genres like K-pop.
These rising musicians from the South caught the attention of Curve Entertainment, Inc., who, after listening to their demos, signed them to their record label. Mario Joson, Curve’s Vice President for Marketing and Business Development, expressed confidence in their immense potential to break into the mainstream.
“We believe that they are a fresh batch of talents with great potential,” Joson remarked.
One of the artists, singer-songwriter Jean Alejandro, hailing from Cagayan De Oro (CDO), recently released his 10-track digital album titled “Quarter After 2:00.” The album delves into dark themes such as infidelity and toxic relationships. He credits fellow CDO native Arthur Nery for his guidance and influence.
“He’s been really an influence,” Jean said of Arthur. “He’s guided me a lot and (shared) a lot of knowledge in terms of writing and composing.”
The two met years ago at a Komunidad event in CDO.
Nier V, another artist from CDO, is working on an album and draws inspiration from rap and hip-hop genres, influenced by artists like Kendrick Lamar and Rich Brian.
Chinoy Valmorida, previously part of the band Natural Roots, embarked on a solo career as an R&B and ballad singer-songwriter. His songs “Gitna” and “ALAS” were featured in a popular K-drama series. While still exploring his musical style, Chinoy is influenced by artists such as John Mayer, Justin Bieber, and Jay R.
As these rising musicians continue to explore their musical styles, influenced by a range of local and international artists, they represent the vibrant and dynamic nature of the Philippine music scene. Their determination, passion, and willingness to step up as regional artists contribute to the growth and diversity of the overall music industry. – WhatALife!/Jayve
