MANILA, PHILIPPINES — “Yes, I am the gay cousin,” Miel Pangilinan, daughter of singer-actress Sharon Cuneta and Senator Kiko Pangilinan, writes on her Instagram as she comes out as queer.
On June 15, 2022, Mariel Daniella Sophia Pangilinan or Miel to close friends and family came out as queer openly and publicly through an Instagram post, posing with the LGBTQ+ flag.
She shared a long emotional message about being happy and thankful for the support of her family and friends while she explored her gender and sexual identity.
The youngest Pangilinan said she’s grateful for having the chance to safely celebrate her identity, acknowledging that there are people around the country without the same privilege.
“i’m also incredibly thankful that i am able to safely celebrate my identity this year, as i know there are many of people in this country that don’t have the same privilege. we’ve got a long way to go in terms of our fight for equality,” she posted.
Pangilinan also said that she has more to learn and understand as a new member of the Filipino queer community and will educate herself to the topics and issues surrounding it.
“i’m trying my best to educate myself on current situations and present issues relating to gender equality and LGBTQ+ rights in our country,” she said.
Family and friends were quick to flock to her comments and show support for Pangilinan, including her celebrity sister KC Concepcion.
“I’m so proud of you!!! I love you sister. I’m always going to be here for you as your « ate » no matter what,” Concepcion commented.
Her father, Kiko Pangilinan, also went to her comment section with the message, “Mama and I will always be here for you. Always. For certain. Forever. No matter what.”
Meanwhile, Sharon Cuneta posted on her Instagram account to show support for her daughter.
“I will have a happier daughter who is now “free” and will always be a good person with a good heart – and still always courageous,” she stated.
