Malaysian PM warns attempts to contain China will fuel its grievances

MALAYSIAN PRIME MINISTER

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated during a speech in Australia on Thursday that attempts to prevent China’s ascent will only worsen the nation and cause conflict in the region.

During a speech at Canberra’s Australian National University, he said that other nations should try to understand how China’s leaders view their country’s increasing military and diplomatic clout as inevitable outcomes of their nation’s economic and technological might.

“In their eyes, the adverse actions on China’s rise, militarily, economically, and technologically, represent nothing less than an attempt to deny their legitimate place in history,” Anwar said.

“The obstacles against China’s economic and technological advancement will further accentuate such grievances.”

Anwar consistently took a dovish stance toward China during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) conference in Australia, which ended on Wednesday. The meeting was overshadowed by fighting between China and the Philippines in the disputed South China Sea.

On Monday, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. of the Philippines declared that his nation would strengthen security cooperation with the United States and thwart Chinese invasions in the disputed sea.

Anwar stated in his speech that Australia and Malaysia had a responsibility to push the United States, China, and other key nations in the Asia-Pacific to act in a way that promotes economic integration and cooperation.

“Why … has the West been so vociferous, vehement, and unequivocal in the condemnation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine while remaining utterly silent on the relentless bloodletting inflicted on innocent men, women, and children of Gaza.”

The joint Australia-ASEAN statement on Wednesday called for the release of hostages detained in the Israel-Hamas war and expressed worry over the “dire” humanitarian situation in Gaza.
