MANILA, Philippines – Kevin Quiambao of De La Salle University bagged the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award on the UAAP season 86.
The awarding will happen on Dec. 3, 2023 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, before Game 2 of the finals.
After 14 elimination round games, Quiambao tallied 16.7 points, 10.9 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 1.9 steals, and was instrumental in the Taft cagers’ campaign en route to this year’s finals.
The 22-year-old, 6-foot-7-inches basketball player was the runaway MVP leader with 97 statistical points, beating University of the East’s Rey Remogat and La Salle’s Evan Nelle, who tallied 85.93 and 75.54 statistical points.
Quiambao became the first local player to claim the MVP honor since Kiefer Ravena won back-to-back in 2014 and 2015. His two triple-doubles in the season, is also the first local Green Archer to win the award since Don Allado in 1998 and 1999..
Aside from Quiambao, University of the East’s Rey Remogat (85.929 SPs), La Salle’s Evan Nelle (77.538 SPs), University of the Philippines’ Season 85 MVP Malick Diouf (74.769 SPs) , and Far Eastern University’s L-Jay Gonzales (66.857 SPs) was included in this year’s Mythical Five.
UP’s Francis Lopez will be awarded as the Rookie of the Year of Season 86 after he tallied 60.357 SPs.
Meanwhile, In women’s play, Ateneo’s Kacey dela Rosa is the UAAP MVP with 83.857 SPs,she’s followed by Josee Kaputu of the FEU Tamaraws with 82.0 SPs.
This year’s women Mythical Five includes Kacey Dela Rosa, Josee Kaputu, Kent Pastrana, Junize Calago and UST’s Tantoy Ferrer (68.571 SPs).
The women’s finals is currently ongoing, with UST leading the NU Lady Bulldogs, while men’s finals are scheduled at 6 p.m.
La Salle is aiming to capture its first UAAP title in seven years.
