The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has confirmed the status of Kanlaon Volcano to Alert Level 2 due to “increasing unrest.” The seismologist further added that the shallow magmatic activity is the source of the volcano’s unrest and could potentially erupt.
Philvocs Director Teresito “Toto” Bacolcol clarified that the potential eruption would not be strong, but he added that a disaster is still possible.

Bacolcol stated that 25 volcanic-tectonic (VT) earthquakes have been recorded since Monday morning. He also added that the last 22 were recorded at 10:35 PM. As of the article’s writing, IPhilvocs confirmed that at least 288 VT earthquakes have been recorded at Kanlaon Volcano.
Residents in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental, have reported that they have felt at least five earthquakes.
“Volcano-tectonic earthquakes are generated by rock fracturing processes, and the increase in VT activity may possibly precede eruptive activity,” Bacolcol warned.
Due to the latest Mount Kanlaon update, the local government of Canlaon City has ordered a mandatory evacuation outside the danger zone. Canlaon City Mayor Jose Chubasco Cardenas cited the need to protect residents.

Philvocs representatives are still keeping tabs on Mt. Kanlaon. They have shared the following details today September 10.
“The public is strongly advised to be ready and vigilant and to avoid entry into the 4-kilometre-radius permanent danger zone to minimize risks from volcanic hazards such as pyroclastic density currents, ballistic projectiles, rockfall, and others.”
Kanlaon Volcano’s last eruption occurred on June 3, 2024, at 8:00 PM. The eruption produced a significant plume that rose approximately 5,000 meters (16,000 feet) above the summit.
