Juan Ponce Enrile, a towering figure in Philippine history, marks his 100th birthday on Valentine’s Day, February 14.

Enrile’s political journey began in the 1950s, traversing numerous high-profile positions such as Secretary of Justice, Minister of National Defense, and Senate President.

This remarkable resilience has earned him the moniker “The Immortal JPE.” Enrile continues to command attention, with his 100th birthday sparking renewed debate about his place in Philippine history.

Supporters hail him as a political icon, emphasizing his contributions to national security and infrastructure development. They point to his role in the People Power Revolution as a defining moment of courage and patriotism.

However, critics remain vocal, highlighting the human rights abuses allegedly committed during his time in the Marcos administration and questioning the legitimacy of his supposed political turnaround.

While Enrile’s case receives much attention due to his prominent background, it’s important to remember that numerous other Filipinos reach the age of 100 each year. The Centenarian Act ensures that all those who reach this milestone receive due recognition and financial support.

Former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile will receive a P100,000 cash gift from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

This honor is bestowed upon him by the Centenarian Act of 2016, which recognizes the significant contributions of Filipino centenarians to the country’s history and culture.
