In an episode of Adulting with Joyce Pring titled “Mom Guilt vs. Dad Guilt,” Joyce Pring and her husband, Juancho Triviño, explored the emotional and psychological challenges that parents face, particularly the guilt they experience in raising their children.

The discussion extended beyond parental guilt, touching on the broader implications of parenting on a child’s mental health.

During the episode, the couple delved on how parenting styles and experiences shape a child’s mental well-being.

“We now have a generation of people who are overdiagnosing themselves because of social media,” Joyce remarked.

She pointed out that many individuals quickly label their emotions in extreme terms without professional evaluation.

“I think it’s being thrown around now because extremes kaagad yung emotions and labeling of experiences,” she noted.

Joyce also tackled a common assumption regarding mental health—that those who struggle with mental illnesses must have had a difficult childhood or problematic parents.

While she acknowledged that childhood experiences and parental relationships play a significant role in mental health, she cautioned against overgeneralizing the causes of mental illnesses.

“Granted, that is a huge factor,” she commented.

“But there are a lot of people who have good parents, great backgrounds, amazing upbringing, incredible childhood, had everything they’ve ever prayed for, better experiences than some of the best people in the world, and still they struggle with mental health issues.” she added.

She further admitted a personal fear:

“As a parent, sometimes that’s what scares me the most—yung effect that—the effect of my parenting to my children.”

The discussion highlights the complex relationship between parenting and children’s mental health.

Although parenting plays a crucial role in a child’s development, mental health challenges can arise from various factors beyond parental influence. Understanding this complexity helps parents handle their role with awareness and with balance.
