Comedian and Actor Jo Koy will be hosting the Golden Globe award show, announced by the event organizers on Thursday.
“I’ve stepped onto a lot of stages around the world in my career, but this one is going to be extra special.” Jo Koy said in a statement.
“This is that moment where I get to make my Filipino family proud. Mahal kita (Google it)!” he added.
The comedian, known for his roles in “Easter Sunday” and Disney’s “Haunted Mansion” expressed his enthusiasm for being in charge of the event that marks the beginning of a three-month period of movie industry ceremonies.
Meanwhile, the 81st edition of the Golden Globes aims to serve as a reset for a brand that has faced criticism in Hollywood over the past few years. In a recent event, a consortium of private investors, led by US billionaire Todd Boehly, acquired and revamped the awards’ assets and trademarks, leading to the dissolution of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).
Additionally, the Globes has expanded its voting poll by incorporating over 200 non-member voters, who are not compensated, from 75 countries worldwide.
This month, event organizers announced that “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” the unexpected duo of films that not only dominated the box office but also became internet sensations over the summer, led the nominations at the awards ceremony.
Additionally, “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Poor Things” received seven nominations each, while “Past Lives” earned five, showcasing their popularity among Golden Globes voters.
CBS executives are anticipating a significant increase in viewers, given that the 2023 Golden Globes experienced a notable decline with just 6.3 million viewers, contrasting with the rebound seen in other awards shows like the Oscars following pandemic-related viewership lows.
Among the contenders are Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.” Renowned figures such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Emma Stone, Paul Giamatti, Timothee Chalamet, Natalie Portman, and Bradley Cooper, who is recognized both as an actor and the director of “Maestro,” are also vying for nominations.
The 81st Golden Globes ceremony is scheduled to take place in Beverly Hills on January 7.
