Filipino-American hurdler Lauren Hoffman ranked 37th in the opening round of the women’s 400m hurdles in the 2024 Paris Olympics on Sunday, August 4, at the Stade de France.
The 25-year-old athlete registered sixth in the first ten seconds of the race and hit fourth by the 25-second mark.
However, her proponents sped up against her, leaving Hoffman behind. The sprinter registered 57.84 seconds, finishing last among eight racers in Heat 4. At the time, Hoffman ranked 30th and eventually wound up 37th in the overall rankings. Thus, failing to proceed to the semifinals.

Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist of the Netherlands, Femke Bol, topped the heats with 53.38 seconds. She is followed by USA’s Anna Cockrell with 53.91 seconds. Lina Nielsen of Great Britain (54.65) and Janieve Russell of Jamaica (54.67) rounded out the qualifiers for the semifinals.
Only the top three racers in each heat and the next three fastest athletes will proceed to the next round, while the rest of the participants will have to work hard in the repechage.
Loosely translating to “second chance,” the repechage is an extra round where track athletes compete to get into the semifinals.

Lauren Hoffman’s compatriot, John Cabang Tolentino, was also relegated to repechage after placing 32nd overall in the heats of the men’s 110m hurdles on Sunday, August 4. He registered 13.66 seconds, finishing sixth in the heat. The men’s hurdle repechage round will be on Tuesday, August 6 at 4:50 PM (Philippine time).
Hoffman will compete in the women’s repechage to remain in medal contention later today, August 5, at 4:50 PM.
