Israeli actress, Gal Gadot, is planned to star as Queen Cleopatra Philopator VII in an upcoming movie in 2025.
Gadot was hoping that the film would “change the narrative” about the iconic figure of history which Elizabeth Taylor famously portrayed back in the movie Cleopatra in 1963.
Gadot’s casting on Cleopatra was proven controversial as the historical figure would be portrayed by an actress who is of Israeli heritage.
Gadot said during an interview that she grew up with stories of Cleopatra, and she’s like a household name.
“You know, if Wonder Woman is the imaginary strong female leader, Cleopatra’s actually the real one,” the actress continued. “All I ever saw in regards to Cleopatra from film was that she was this seductive woman who had affairs with Julius Caesar and Marc Anthony. But the truth is, there’s so much more to her.”
Though the controversy is not very heated, the upcoming movie of Gal Gadot as Cleopatra has gained some attention.
Originally, Cleopatra VII Philopator was of Macedonian Greek descent. The confusing identity of these people shows the public sphere of casting choices for documentaries and works of historical fiction movies.
During an interview with BBC in 2020, Gadot said that there were no actors of Macedonian descent that were willing to star in the role of Cleopatra.
She was very passionate about Cleopatra and was willing to celebrate the legacy of Cleopatra and honor the amazing historical figure that she admired so much.
Then in an interview with Vogue, Gadot states, “We have a beautiful script, and I cannot wait to share this story with the world and change the narrative of Cleopatra simply being a seductor.”
Gadot has starred in several other top-list movies such as the Fast & Furious franchise, and possibly returning back to the DC franchise following after the cancellation of a third Wonder Woman movie. – WhatALife!/Zain
