NEW YORK, USA — Last week, a man in New York tried to kill a Filipina, with footage of the attack showing the victim taking over 125 punches. The incident is due to Asian hate crime in the city, a third record in less than one week.
According to the station, the man is charged with attempted murder as a hate crime and has a lengthy criminal record. The attack took place on March 11th.
Security footage from their condo building’s lobby revealed Tammel Esco, 42, attacking his 67-year-old neighbor, according to officials. The suspect punched her 125 times, kicked her seven times, spat on her twice, and used anti-Asian comments on her.
Yonkers Police Commissioner, John Mueller said that they are going to file the case as a hate crime, and prosecuting attempted murder depending on the amount of attacks and the duration of the incident.
The attacker yelled racist slurs at the Filipina, referring to her as an “Asian bitch.” The woman disregarded the remark and continued heading towards the foyer when the suspect abruptly attacked her and hit her in the head, knocking her to the ground.
The incident was recorded in this footage.
Meanwhile, Elmer Cato, the Philippine Consul General in New York City, has strongly condemned the act.
“We are outraged by this unspeakable act committed against an elderly member of the Filipino community. This is the third incident in less than a week where elderly kababayan have become victims of random violence,” Cato stated in a twitter post.
