The enchanting tale of Elphaba and Glinda is set to captivate audiences once again as the beloved Broadway musical “Wicked” takes the leap to the big screen in a highly-anticipated two-part musical film adaptation.
The first installment, featuring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in the lead roles, is slated to debut this year, with “Wicked: Part Two” scheduled to hit cinemas in 2025.
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo will bring the iconic characters of Glinda and Elphaba to life, portraying the misunderstood green-skinned young woman and the privileged and ambitious popular girl, respectively.
The story unfolds as they meet at the Shiz University in the Land of Oz, embarking on an unlikely friendship that evolves into a journey of self-discovery.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Jon M. Chu, the movie promises an immersive and cultural celebration, offering a fresh perspective on the Land of Oz that diverges from the one encountered by Dorothy Gale in “The Wizard of Oz.”
The star-studded cast includes Michelle Yeoh as Shiz University’s regal headmistress Madame Morrible, Jonathan Bailey as the roguish and carefree prince Fiyero, and Tony nominee Ethan Slater as Munchkin student Boq.
Jeff Goldblum joins the ensemble as the Wizard of Oz, and Marissa Bode makes her feature film debut as Nessarose, Elphaba’s sister.
Other notable cast members include Keala Settle as Miss Coddle, Bowen Yang as Pfannee, Adam James as Glinda’s father, and Bronwyn James as ShenShen, among others.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Ariana Grande emphasized the theme of “selfless love and friendship” that defines the relationship between Glinda and Elphaba.
Despite their differences, the characters become each other’s first real friends, accepting each other unconditionally.
Cynthia Erivo explained that the narrative will explore how Glinda and Elphaba are “different sides of the same coin” and how they come to see each other clearly.
Director Jon M. Chu expressed that “Wicked” transcends being just a Broadway musical, describing it as “the” American fairy tale.
The film will delve into existential questions such as truth, the concept of a happy ending, and the significance of the yellow brick road.
The movie trailer premiered during Super Bowl LVIII, providing a sneak peek into the magical world of “Wicked.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, filming for Chu’s adaptation concluded last month, building anticipation for the cinematic spectacle that awaits audiences.
