MANILA, PHILIPPINES — According to Phivolcs (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology), a 5.3 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Davao del Sur on Monday, October 24, morning, which occurred at around 10:06 a.m.
In an earthquake bulletin issued at 11:20 a.m., Phivolcs said the earthquake struck at 10:06 a.m. a few kilometers from Davao City. Its epicenter was 16 kilometers southwest of the city of Davao.
In the bulletin, the state seismologists reported that the tremor was tectonic in origin. It also added that the tectonic quake had a depth of 254 kilometers.
The agency reported that Intensity III was felt in Malungon, Sarangani. Meanwhile citizens in the areas of Don Marcelino and Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental, experienced Intensity II vibrations. Intensity I vibrations was felt in areas of Alabel, Malapatan, and Sarangani; Tupi, General Santos City, South Cotabato; and Kidapawan City, Cotabato.
An Intensity III quake is characterized by “weak shaking,” while an Intensity II vibration would be “slightly felt.” Intensity I vibrations are “scarcely perceptible.”
Aftershocks are very likely to occur. However, Phivolcs further detailed that they do not expect damage from the magnitude 5.3 quake.
Magnitude 5.1 earthquake in Davao Occidental
On October 23, Sunday morning, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck offshore Balut Island in Sarangani, Davao Occidental, according to Phivolcs.
The earthquake, which was tectonic in origin, occurred at 10:15 in the morning and had a depth of 259 km. The epicenter of the quake was located at 02.98°N, 128.65°E – 447 km S 53° E of Balut Island.
Reports previously classified the tectonic quake to have a magnitude of 5.6, but Phivolcs reduced the classification to 5.1 Magnitude.
Phvolcs also had no expectations that the quake would damage buildings or have aftershocks. – WhatALife!/Zed
