Doc Willie Ong Shares His Story on KMJS

Former Vice President candidate Willie Ong talks about his recent sarcoma diagnosis with Jessica Soho. The doctor is currently in Singapore, seeking treatment for his sarcoma cancer.

A few weeks ago, Willie Ong shocked the entire Philippines with his cancer diagnosis. Ong is known for his online and free health-related educational videos. Additionally, he ran for public office in the previous election as Isko Moreno’s VP.

Other health professionals said that Doc Willie’s cancer is one of the rare types. He said he started feeling shortness of breath and fatigue in his medical missions last year. Ong also shared that his routine tests were clear until his recent diagnosis.

He uploaded a few videos reacting to the pain of the tumor, which have gained traction. In one video, you could hear him weeping due to its pain. Moreover, Willie says that the stress of the former elections contributed to his cancer.

Willie Ong’s campaign platforms included accessible and reliable healthcare in the country. He also shared that he made his videos to make healthcare more accessible. Since his visit to Singapore to seek treatment, he’s seen a big difference between the Philippine healthcare system and the Philippines.

He said that tests and treatments here can take weeks for each patient to receive. The system in Singapore was able to grant him testing and treatment in just forty-eight hours. He even said he feels guilty because of his privilege of finding healing in a more progressive country.

Willie Ong updates from the Jessica Soho clip include him losing all his hair. “Pinili kong ‘wag mag wig eh. Para makita nila ang tunay,” he even said. Sadly, Ong even added, “Wow, my last hair.”

When Jessica asked him for Willie Ong’s updates, he replied, “It’s 50-50 eh. 50% to live for a few months, a year. 50% anytime, baka hindi na ako huminga. Parang walang kasiguraduhan eh. Everyday is a blessing.”

Additionally, he said that he and his wife no longer sleep at night. He says that he screams a lot from the pain. “Hihiyaw ka sa sakit talaga. If somebody told me he will give me Dormicum and let me sleep it off and die, okay na saakin. I would have taken it.”

“Kaya siguro pag-isipan din natin ‘yung mga euthanasia, kung talagang hirap na hirap na. Minsan sobra rin tayong mag-prolong ng life, baka hindi naman talaga’ yun ang mission. I think the purpose of this life is just to finish your mission.”
