MANILA, Philippines – Ylana Marie Aduana, the Philippines’ representative for Miss Earth 2023, won the Miss Earth Air 2023 title on Friday, December 22.
In the final round, she was asked: “An official at a recent climate conference was quoted as saying ‘there is no science behind calls for the phaseout of fossil fuels.’ Do you agree? Why, or why not?”
Aduana responded, “As someone who is from the medical field, I do believe that everything roots from science and I think that the greatest gift we have in this generation is the sophisticated technical installations that we have and so there is science in the phaseout of fossil fuels.”
She added, “One thing we can also agree on is that we can live the zero-waste and sustainable lifestyle. I’ve always been practicing it because sustainability will always ensure the stability in our future.”
Aduana aimed to secure the Philippines’ fifth Miss Earth title, following the victories of Karen Ibasco (2017), Angelia Ong (2015), Jamie Herrell (2014), and Karla Henry (2008).
Besides the main Miss Earth title, the competition also awards “elemental queens” with individual titles—Miss Earth-Air, Miss Earth-Water, and Miss Earth-Fire.
Four Filipino women have claimed the main Miss Earth title. Karla Henry was the first in 2008, followed by Jamie Herrell in 2014, Angelia Ong in 2015, and Karen Ibasco in 2017.
Apart from Aduana, the Philippines has had two other Miss Earth-Air winners—Eurasian participants Sandra Seifert in 2009 and Stephany Stefanowitz in 2012.
