Singer and actress Gigi de Lana guests on Toni Talks, where she talks about her life and why she almost quit singing. The artist also talks about recently losing her mom and how she continues to overcome life’s struggles.
Toni Gonzaga interviewed the singer in the latest Toni Talks episode. Here, they talked about her rise to fame and how she navigates life in the public eye. When Toni asked her where they shot their viral covers, she said the studio belonged to Gigi de Lana’s boyfriend.
Aside from viral online covers with her band, Gigi Lana also had a Tawag ng Tanghalan stint over eight years ago. At that time, she performed as Mary Gidget Dela Llana.
The interview starts with the singer talking about her childhood. Gigi de Lana shared that her parents were separated, and she mainly grew up with her mom. She also added that she met her dad in high school.

Growing up, she described her relationship with her mother as “very aso’t pusa,” but their love remained. She also shared that there were times when she didn’t understand her mother’s parenting as a kid or teen. However, she shares that she understands now and that she never found her mother abusive.
Unfortunately, Gigi de Lana’s mother was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago. When asked what’s something her mom told her that she would always remember, she responded, “Lagi kang mag-dasal. Lumingon ka sa pinaggalingan mo. Mahalin mo ang lahat ng taong nakapaligid sa’yo.”
Toni also asked the singer what the most painful thing her mother had said to her was. Gigi responded, “Sana di nalang kita pinanganak. Sana noong nasa tiyan palang kita, pinatay na kita.” She explained that her mother said this during her rebellious years.
Regarding her music career, Gigi shared that she almost quit due to harsh criticism. She pointed out that viewers would often criticize her every move in videos, including the way she laughed, sat, and more. However, she also pointed out that multiple viewers liked seeing her on screen.
Gigi de Lana also talked about how she expanded her artistry. During this time, numerous viewers said, “Ay ba’t siya nagbabago? Nag dadrugs na ba siya?”
She turned emotional when discussing that specific comment, explaining that she just wanted to show her versatility as an artist. “Bakit kailangan niyong mambash ng taong gusto lang naman mag grow?” she asked.
The singer further added, “Dumating sa point ate Toni na, kakanta pa ba ako?”

De Lana also shared how the community wasn’t very accepting of her tattoos and shorter hair. What the majority didn’t know was that she cut her hair to support her mom, who was going through chemotherapy.
When talking about her mom, the singer shared that she blames herself for her mother’s passing. She says that when her mom was initially diagnosed, she didn’t have the money to pay for treatment.
When her mom passed away, Gigi was in Canada for a concert. Despite her mom’s passing, she still pushed through with the event. She says that it’s what her mom would have wanted, for her to maintain her professionalism.
“Sinisisi ko kasi ‘yung sarili ko ate kung bakit siya lumala ng ganyan. Kasi wala akong pera una, di ko siya mapagamot. Mag-isa lang ako eh. At siya lang din ‘yung lakas ko madalas. Siya lang.”
